On the 12th of October 2024, Journal My Journey proudly hosted its first event, "My Brother’s Keeper." This remarkable gathering created a safe, supportive space where men came together to share their stories, play games, and enjoy a sense of community. The event was designed not only to offer a space for social interaction but also to break down the barriers that often prevent men from opening up about their mental health.

A key feature of the event was the inclusion of thought-provoking questions aimed at encouraging introspection and discussion. One powerful moment came when attendees were asked, "On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your mental health?" This simple yet profound question prompted many men to reflect on their personal mental health journeys and share their experiences with the group. For many, it was an opportunity to speak openly about challenges they may have kept hidden, fostering a collective sense of support and understanding.
The event was elevated by several inspiring guest speakers, each with a personal connection to the cause of men’s mental health. Michael Mongi, founder of The Fathers Project, shared his own journey and explained how his initiative brings men together to discuss mental health and fatherhood in an open, supportive environment. His message highlighted the importance of community and conversation in helping men navigate life’s challenges.

Another impactful speaker was Alex Holmes, a therapist who shared valuable insights into emotional well-being, emphasising the importance of seeking help when needed and engaging in mental health practices that promote long-term resilience. His professional perspective resonated with many in attendance, offering practical advice for managing mental health.
The event also featured an emotional testimony from Shocka, a mental health advocate and musician, who recounted his own journey through the mental health system, including multiple stays in mental health institutions. Shocka's story of survival, recovery, and growth struck a deep chord with the audience, particularly as he now uses his platform to advocate for mental health awareness and encourage other men to seek support when struggling.
Throughout the event, attendees were not only engaged in meaningful conversations but were also able to enjoy light-hearted moments. Games were played, meals were shared, and the overall atmosphere was one of friendship and openness.

"My Brother’s Keeper" was more than just a gathering; it was a powerful step toward normalising conversations around men’s mental health. By combining personal stories, professional insights, and communal activities, Journal My Journey was able to create an environment where men could feel seen, heard, and supported. The success of the event marks the beginning of an important journey for the organisation, which will continue to focus on creating spaces where men can reflect, connect, and grow.
As Journal My Journey moves forward, we aim to build on the foundation laid by "My Brother’s Keeper," expanding our reach and continuing to provide men with the tools, support, and community they need to thrive. We look forward to hosting many more events that empower men to take control of their mental health and well-being.
